4/18/2023 0 Comments Big business setlistWedding gigs can be like this for example, but also other celebrations usually are less or more like this. Over 45min gigs are usually some types of background music rather than shows that people come to see and they usually require multiple sets with a little half time in between. You don’t really have time to build up anything, instead, you should just keep the energy high during the whole gig. ![]() In situations like this, you really want to play only the very best songs you have in order to give the audience a great experience but making those carefully selected tunes fit together in the given time limit can be tricky. That leaves you with a maximum of 20min of actually playing your songs and if we divide 20min with 3min we find out that you have time for roughly 6 songs and a bit leftover time. For example, let’s say you get 25min of stage time including setup and breakdown. Sometimes it can cause problems if you have very little time on the stage (under 30min) to play and you have to try and make a compelling setlist with so few songs. You can’t pick songs by their length alone, they need to fit nicely together to make a professional sounding and cohesive piece of art. While it doesn’t take more math skills it does take some more thinking and planning. Well, it’s not always this simple, I’m afraid. Just find out how long you are supposed to play and choose enough songs to fill that time. Shorter and longer showsĬalculating the right number of songs for the gig, fortunately, doesn’t require a degree in math. ![]() In the next part below I will go through the system of calculating the number of songs you need for sets that are of different length and some important variables you need to know. Not all gigs are indeed 45min long but you can use that estimate as an easy reference for longer or shorter gigs and just subtract or add songs accordingly. The number of songs can vary though because some songs are longer and that should be taken into account while making a setlist. There are a couple of really important things you need to take into account but luckily, it isn’t rocket science.Īn average setlist consists of roughly 15 three-minute-long songs making the show 45min long altogether. If you are new to playing music live you are probably wondering how many songs you should take into your setlist for your first gigs.
